.25 more days!

Tomorrow at 7am we'll be heading to Miami International Airport for a very exciting vacation to Dominican Republic for two whole weeks.

I've been anticipating this day for months!

Since Raul and I both have family there, we won't be staying at some fancy resort right off the beach. Nope. We'll be staying in the capital, Santo Domingo. Where the power goes off for about 8 hours straight and you often have to shower with freezing cold water sometimes out of a bucket.

It may sound awful but it's awesome...and I can't wait.

Another great thing, most people like to show you you're welcome in their home by offering you tons of food.

I currently weigh 127.4.
I'm estimating a 10lb weight gain. All worth it. I'll get back to you.

Miss me!

and when the groove is dead and gone

So sad.

One of my favorite MJ songs.

Undeniably the greatest artist that has ever lived.

Birthday Wishes

My birthday is a whole two months away but I thought "Perfect! They'll have time to save!". If anyone ever asks me what I want for either my birthday or Christmas, I usually am too "shy" to answer. I mean, isn't it kinda rude to tell people what you want (Raul, you are excluded from this as I obviously have no shame)? Isn't it the thought that counts?

Well, yeah it is but lets be honest. You'll probably get me something and...I probably won't like it and I'll keep it in my closet for years in case you ask me about it I can lie and say "Oh, yeah, I use it all the time! Look here it is!" until a few years pass and I'm convinced you've forgotten about it and I can toss it in a Goodwill bin. Phew.

So here goes ladies & gents.

The birthday wishlist.

So me. I mean, the diamond is even ON New York City. Don't worry, I like the silver one from Maya Brenner

This beautiful lace peasant dress I would wear everyday!

Cupcake print from TheLobsterPots Shop

Manhattan Print from Ork Posters!

How awesome is this ghost chair replica! My dirty laundry would look much better strewn over this chair instead of on the floor.

A combination of guava, red velvet and vanilla chocolate Buttercream cupcakes with some champagne to wash it down!

Well, it was either this or a post about us doing a whole lot of cleaning, packing and eating hot dogs for lunch and dinner.

Mamajuana Cafe aka my new favorite restaurant

Our friend Ana Carolina is moving to Dominican Republic so we had a little going away dinner for her.

We went to Mamajuana Cafe in Coral Gables. Usually I wait a few days to blog but I couldn't wait to tell you how uh-mazing this place is.

This is exactly what Miami needed, an upscale Dominican restaurant that serves good food and great ambience. The location doesn't hurt either!

The restaurant is a big open space with dark woods, decorated with beautiful chandeliers and Dominican artwork.
Check out the drink menu! Love it!

Sirs with his sancocho and morir soñando. What's the saying? You can take the kid out of the campo but you can't take the campo out of the kid? Jaykay, jaykay.

I had their signature Mamajuana Mojito infused with tamarindo and coconut & platano encrusted shrimp with mamajuana apricot glaze. Yes, yum.

Oh and they also have "Dominican Sushi" (not as many raw ingredients) with appropriate names like Boca Chica, Inwood, Heights (Haiyooo) and Campesino which is crispy salami, crispy white cheese, avocado & sweet plantain. I had to refrain myself from ordering that muiltiple times.

They even had a live band playing AWESOME remakes of recent hits like Rihannas Umbrella & Gnarls Barkleys Crazy.

Had a great time. Way to end a Monday!

Good luck Ana and hope to see you when we go on vacation in

4 days!

yay!

I missed you love

Dessert before dinner? Why not.
[L.A. Sweets guava & cream cheese cupcakes may just be better than buttercreams. Crazy, I know.]

Tried out Fratelli La Bufala thanks to a suggestion from a couple of rockstars.

Turns out its right on the corner of 5th & Washington.
Pure action.

I was getting attacked by mosquitos so the waitress brought out basil because apparently "I don't know, the chefs told me it helps with mosquitos".

It didn't work but I appreciated the delicious scent.

Sirs empty chair (he was at a work event).

I missed you, Lover!

Happy Fathers Day

My dad sometime in the 70's, I assume. Wasn't he so handsome? Love the do, pops.

Happy Fathers Day!

Here comes the sun doo roo doo roo

Sometimes the beach can be annoying. Too hot. Too windy (sand in every orifice). Too crowded.
Not this time. Perfection. The water was luke-warm. No waves (they give me headaches).

I didn't want to leave. But I did. Boo.

Have a great weekend!

[p.s. I do have ten toes]

Happy 4th of July!

I'm a big lover of holidays especially Christmas, Halloween and Independence Day. So when Raul and I decided that the best time for us to take our trip to Dominican Republic would cause me to miss the 4th of July, though excited, I was also a little bummed. I love the BBQ's, the lemonade, the fireworks and blasting the oldies station.

So that's exactly what I did. I surprised Raul with a little celebration...on June 16th.

Better early than never, right?
Our "All-American" little menu consisted of Turkey Burgers with Swiss Cheese & Bacon, Potato & Pea Salad w/ Chive Aïoli and Lemonade w/ Basil (<- so good)
Don't mind my dead petunias. I'm convinced the gnome put a curse on them.

Apple Crisp

We got a kick out of it.

Hope your July 4th turns out as lovely as ours did!

Beach

I'm hoping I get to go before next weekend. It's not looking good.

[Watching the finale of Real Housewives of New Jersey. I think Danielle's relationship with her daughters is absolutely disgusting. She's horrid.]

Thunderbird Drive-In

On Friday night we headed to Fort Lauderdale to check out a drive-in movie theatre I never knew existed. Apparently, its been there since the 1960's but its been masquerading as a Swap Shop (Flea Market) by day.

I heard it was a little "ghetto" but I didn't think so at all. You pull in to your desired parking area, put your windows up, tune into the station playing your movie and sit back and pretend you're living a scene out of Grease or Happy Days. Except that there was no getting to 1st base in the backseat.

The best part?
You can bring your own snacks and I wore my house slippers and no one knew.
On the way back home we ran into a buttload of traffic after they closed off the palmetto and Sirs was a little upset.

I'd definately take the hour trip to the drive-in again. Ya know, something different.

Happy Friday!

Although I'm on vacation, I still love and look forward to Fridays.

Sirs is home with me in the mornings and my friends can come out and play.

15 days - Cannot wait until the real thing

but I must say, this was pretty damn good & authentic.

La Tambora Restaurant on US1 - "Tan Dominicano como el merengue". Hehehahahoho.

The place is a little errrr, "uncouth" but the food was awesome.
[Chicharron de pollo con mofongo]

[Lo 3 Golpe]
I could happily eat this everyday of my life.

& what Dominican meal is complete without lefleco lojo? Well, all of them but psh, whatever. I prefer the merengue flavor.

Cheap, good & best part is they're open 'til like 3am. Late night grub spot!

To all my non-Dominican frangs, do yourselves a favor and have some mangu. I know it looks unattractive but trust.

Way better than flowers

Especially when the packaging is custom made with love just for you.

Boyfriend usually brings me home flowers from work but last week he came home with these.

They're Mishas but Mishas cupcakes are better than no cupcakes & I'm glad lover knows me enough to know that.

Turned out to be a very random night

Our friend, Rinel and I.

Even Diana made an appearance.

No, no. Diana did not take this picture. Our regular digital camera took it and I got creative (tried).

Rockband @ Midnight on a Monday after a calorie-fest @ KFC?

Rebels.
